Top 24 Best Dry Dog Food
Product Line Dry Dog Food – Acana Classics

Acana is made by Champion Petfoods, the same Canadians that make Orijen. That bodes very well, as Orijen is one of my top-rated foods and something I’d happily feed my dogs. This review is for the Chicken and Burbank potato flavor in the range.
Chicken Meal tops the ingredient list so you can’t get better than that, and it’s re-enforced with de-boned chicken to ensure your dog is getting plenty of meat. Potato and oats are great carb sources, with “steal-cut” oats being what the Scots use to make porridge, so you can’t go wrong there. After that we have a grocery list your Grandma would be proud of, with wonderful protein sources such as whole eggs (the best form of eggs), flounder, and peas.
We also have chicken fat, chicken liver, and chicken liver oil, all good sources of vitamins and omega fatty acids.
This food is very much in keeping with Orijen, and what we’d expect from such a reputable company that prides itself on using fresh, quality ingredients. It’s really hard to fault this food… the only small thing being this particular flavor is slightly lower in protein than other flavors in the range. If you have a super-active dog then opt for the Adult Small Breed or Adult Large Breed varieties.
What’s good about this food….
Great meat ingredients of a high quality. Excellent choice of grain, vegetables, fruits, and protein sources.
….and what’s not so good.
Same as Orijen – Absolutely, positively, nothing.
Ingredients
Chicken meal, deboned chicken, whole potato, steel-cut oats, peas, whole egg, deboned flounder, sun-cured alfalfa, chicken fat, oat flakes, chicken liver, chicken liver oil, herring oil, pea fiber, whole apples, whole pears, sweet potato, pumpkin, butternut squash, parsnips, , spinach, cranberries, blueberries, kelp, chicory root, juniper berries, angelica root, marigold flowers, sweet fennel, peppermint leaf, lavender, rosemary.
Product Line Dry Dog Food – Artemis Fresh Mix

Artemis Fresh Mix is the base range from the company being a grain-based kibble. They also offer OsoPure as a grain free option, and Pro Power as a high-protein option for active or working dogs.
For this review I’ll focus on the Medium/Large Breed Adult formula. There’s a number of other recipes in the range, catering for smaller dogs (smaller kibble, higher protein), senior, and weight management (with very low fat at 6%). The rating of this review applies to all recipes across the range.
Let’s take a look…
The top three ingredients in the food are all decent meat ingredients – chicken, chicken meal, and turkey – backed up by a selection of top quality grains – barley, brown rice, and oatmeal. I really can’t fault that for a grain-based kibble, and it’s nice to see the meat ingredients being prevalent over the grains. Top marks.
The dry matter protein of 23% is average, but we can rest assured most of the protein is coming from easily digestible meat (and not the likes of corn and corn gluten meal we often find in cheaper foods).
This certainly isn’t a simple food as far as ingredients go. It looks to me like they’ve packed in a whole shopping list. In addition to the chicken and turkey we find duck, salmon, and fish meal included, and also chicken fat as a necessary source of nutrients, omega 6, and energy. As well as the grains listed above we find millet, and also potato as another source of carbs. There’s a range of vitamins and minerals, and some really nice inclusions like green tea extract as an antioxidant, for skin and coat, eggs, kelp, spinach, and a range of fruits and veggies. Chicory root is a source of soluble dietary fibre and a prebiotic to aid digestion. Yep, this food is packed with decent ingredients.
It’s one of the best grain-based kibbles on the market so I’ll give it 5 stars for being a solid daily diet. If you have an active dog then I’d sway towards Pro Power as an alternative, but otherwise I find this food hard to fault.
What’s good about this food….
Superb range of ingredients, well thought out.
….and what’s not so good.
There’s a lot of grain in the food, but that said they’re decent grains.
Ingredients
Chicken, Chicken Meal, Turkey, Barley, Brown Rice, Oatmeal, Millet, Peas, Chicken Fat (Preserved with Mixed Tocopherols), Tomato Pomace, Potatoes, Duck, Salmon, Egg Product, , Flavor Enhancer, Salmon Oil (Source of DHA), Fish Meal, Choline Chloride, Dried Chicory Root, Dried Skim Milk, Kelp, , Apples, Tomatoes, Blueberries, Spinach, Cranberries, Rosemary Extract, Parsley Flake, Green Tea Extract, Barley Grass Extract, L-Carnitine, Enterococcus Faecieum, Lactobacillus Casei, Lactobacillus Acidophilus, Saccharomyces Cerevesiae Fermentation Solubles, Dried Aspergillus Oryzae Fermentation Extract, Vitamin E Supplement, Iron Proteinate, Zinc Proteinate, Copper Proteinate, Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Potassium Iodide, Thiamine Mononitrate, Manganese Proteinate, Manganous Oxide, Ascorbic Acid, Vitamin A Supplement, Biotin, Calcium Pantothenate, Manganese Sulfate, Sodium Selenite, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (vitamin B6), Vitamin B12 Supplement, Riboflavin, Vitamin D Supplement , Folic Acid.
Product Line Dry Dog Food – Artemis Osopure

I hadn’t heard of Artemis until I stumbled across them on the internet. I don’t think their food is readily available, but you can buy it online if you search around.
I’ve decided to review the rather unique Bison & Garbanzo variety. If you don’t know what garbanzo beans are then I’ll forgive you, they’re chickpeas – an excellent ingredient and great source of fibre, lecithin, potassium, and vitamins A, B, and C. With quality ingredients like that it sticks out from the crowd, and I’m excited about this food. It’s also one of the few grain free dog foods available in Australia, which is great for dogs that suffer allergies.
Bison is a quality ingredient, found in a few decent pet food brands including Canidae. We need to be mindful of the fact it’s weighed before cooking and mostly water, but that’s okay as it’s backed up by salmon meal, another quality meat product packed with protein and nutrients. Garbanzo is very unique in a pet food, but it’s great for dogs as previously mentioned.
Next comes sweet potato and potato, arguably the best carbohydrate source in pet food. Peas are a great source of fibre too. Canola oil is a good choice of oil, and this is supported with salmon meal and ocean fish meal. Flax seed is good for a healthy, shiny coat, as well as being a source of omega fatty acids. We also have a range of fruits and veggies including chicory root, blueberries, and raspberries.
I see this food as on par with other quality foods such as Orijen and Taste of the Wild. This is a company that cares about their food.
What’s good about this food….
Superb ingredients, well thought out.
….and what’s not so good.
Nothing worth mentioning.
Ingredients
Bison,Salmon Meal, Garbanzo Beans, Sweet Potatoes, Potatoes,Peas, Canola Oil, Ocean Fish Meal,Tomato Pomace, , Natural Flavour,Salt,Choline Chloride, Dried Chicory Root,Tomatoes, Blueberries,Raspberries,Yucca Schidigera Extract, Green Tea Extract, Barley Grass Extract, Dried fermentation products of Enterococcus Faecieum,Lactobacillus Acidophilus Lactobacillus Casei and Lactobacillus Plantarum,Dried Trichoderma Longibrachiatum Fermentation Extract, Vitamin E Supplement, Iron Proteinate, Zinc Proteinate, Copper Proteinate, Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Potassium Iodide, Thiamine Mononitrate (Vitamin B1), Manganese Proteinate, Manganous Oxide, Ascorbic Acid, Vitamin A Supplement, Biotin, Niacin, Calcium Pantothenate, Manganese Sulfate, Sodium Selenite, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (vitamin B6), Vitamin B12 Supplement, Riboflavin (Vitamin B2), Vitamin D Supplement, Folic Acid.
Product Line Dry Dog Food – Artemis Pro Power

I personally fed my Border Collie Artemis Osopure for a number of months and she did incredibly well on it, and she was very keen on their cat food to the dismay of our cat. The standard grain-based kibble from Artemis is pretty good – Fresh Mix.
Let’s take a look…
Chicken and Chicken Meal make up the top two ingredients which is great to see. There’s a decent amount of protein in the food (30%), and we can be assured this will come from the chicken. Dogs find meat proteins much easier to digest than plant proteins, so this is really good.
Barley and Brown Rice are good choices of grain. There’s certainly a lot worse choices as far as grains go, and these are two of the best. Rice Bran is an excellent source of fibre, B vitamins, minerals, and omega 3.
Chicken Fat is a great source of essential fatty acids, good for growth and a healthy skin and coat, and one of the best sources of energy.
It’s really nice to see ingredients such as chicory root, a prebiotic and source of soluble fiber to aid digestion. is included for healthy skin and coat, and we find salmon and salmon oil which will aid skin and coat as well as heart and joint health. We also find green tea extract as an antioxidant, which is nice to see.
All the other ingredients are pretty good – it seems standard of Artemis to really pack out their foods with quality ingredients.
This is a great high-protein food for active and working dogs.
What’s good about this food….
Excellent meat content, with a high protein percentage.
….and what’s not so good.
Very little worth mentioning.
Ingredients
Chicken, Chicken Meal, Cracked Pearled Barley, Brown Rice, Rice Bran, Chicken Fat (Preserved with Mixed Tocopherols), Tomato Pomace, , Brewers Yeast, Natural Chicken Flavor, Ocean Fish Meal, Methionine,Choline Chloride, Dried Chicory Root, Hydrochloride, Chondroitin Sulfate, Green Tea Extract, Barley Grass Extract, Vitamin E Supplement, Iron Proteinate, Zinc Proteinate, Copper Proteinate, Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Potassium Iodide, Thiamine Mononitrate, Manganese Proteinate, Manganous Oxide, Ascorbic Acid, Vitamin A Supplement, Biotin, Calcium Pantothenate, Manganese Sulfate, Sodium Selenite, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B6), Vitamin B12 Supplement, Riboflavin, Vitamin D Supplement, Folic Acid.
Product Line Dry Dog Food – Blue Buffalo Freedom

The Freedom range from the Blue Buffalo Company is a lower-protein alternative to their Wilderness range. This food would be great for older or less active dogs. It’s grain free too, which you can’t complain about. For this review we’ll look at the Grain Free Chicken variety.
The top ingredient is de-boned chicken, backed up by chicken meal. This is a great start and what we like to see. We also see Turkey Meal further down the ingredients as an additional protein source.
Next in the line are peas, potatoes, and pea starch, all great choices of carbs for a lower energy diet. Potatoes are one of the best sources of carbs. Peas are too, as well as being a source of other nutrients and omega-3 fats.
In keeping with Wilderness, the food is packed with legumes and fruit such as , sweet potatoes, blueberries, and cranberries. We also find and alfalfa high in the ingredients list which is a nice touch. The array of vitamins is plentiful.
I rate the Blue Buffalo company and recommend their food, this one included. 5 star.
What’s good about this food….
Decent meat and carbohydrate content, making this a good food for less active dogs. A great list of fruits and vegetables, , and tons of vitamins.
….and what’s not so good.
Nothing to report.
Ingredients
Deboned Chicken, Chicken Meal, Peas, Potatoes, Pea Starch, Chicken Fat (preserved with Mixed Tocopherols and Citric Acid), Turkey Meal, Pea Fiber, Tomato Pomace (source of Lycopene), (source of Omega 3 and 6 Fatty Acids), Natural Chicken Flavor, Alfalfa Meal, Potato Starch, Whole , Whole Sweet Potatoes, Blueberries, Cranberries, Barley Grass, Dried Parsley, Garlic, Dried Kelp, Taurine, Yucca Schidigera Extract, L-Carnitine, L-Lysine, Hydrochloride, Chondroitin Sulfate, Turmeric, Oil of Rosemary, Dried Chicory Root, Beta Carotene, Vitamin A Supplement, Thiamine Mononitrate (Vitamin B1), Riboflavin (Vitamin B2), Niacin (Vitamin B3), d-Calcium Pantothenate (Vitamin B5), Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B6), Biotin (Vitamin B7), Folic Acid (Vitamin B9), Vitamin B12 Supplement, Calcium Ascorbate (source of Vitamin C), Vitamin D3 Supplement, Vitamin E Supplement, Iron Amino Acid Chelate, Zinc Amino Acid Chelate, Manganese Amino Acid Chelate, Copper Amino Acid Chelate, Choline Chloride, Sodium Selenite, Calcium Iodate, Salt, Caramel, Potassium Chloride, Calcium Carbonate, Dicalcium Phosphate, Dried Yeast (source of Saccharomyces cerevisiae), Dried Lactobacillus acidophilus fermentation product, Dried Bacillus subtilis fermentation product, Dried Enterococcus faecium fermentation product.
Product Line Dry Dog Food – Blue Buffalo Wilderness

Blue Wilderness, by the Blue Buffalo Company, is one of the best dog foods I’ve found thus far. Oddly enough, I can only seem to find it at Petsmart, which has a pretty bad track record of the food it carries. Perhaps they have some sort of contract with them.
Within the first 5 ingredients, we see 3 named meat ingredients, and 2 of those are meat “meals” which only adds to the amount of good protein in this food. They use peas for the main source of carbohydrates and fibre, which is good to see, and this will also boost the protein of the food. They used to use more potato so this is an improvement on their original recipe. Tapioca starch is included as an additional gluten-free source of carbohydrates.
Not only is the meat content more than enough, but they include , sweet potatoes, blueberries, and cranberries to give a great mix of fruits and vegetables. This only further gives this food credibility as one of the best foods you can give your dog. What’s more, they are mindful to use as a fat source and for Omega fatty acids that promote heart health. If that wasn’t enough, the array of vitamins is plentiful.
This is very recommended if you shop at Petsmart, but just be prepared to pay.
What’s good about this food….
Decent meat content with 3 quality meats at the top of the ingredients list, with 2 of them being meat meals. Many fruits and vegetables used, flax is present. Tons of vitamins.
….and what’s not so good.
Nothing to report.
Ingredients
Deboned Chicken, Chicken Meal, Turkey Meal, Peas, Tapioca Starch, Tomato Pomace (source of Lycopene), Chicken Fat (preserved with Mixed Tocopherols and Citric Acid),Natural Chicken Flavor, (source of Omega 3 and 6 Fatty Acids), Potatoes,Alfalfa Meal, Potato Starch, Whole , Whole Sweet Potatoes, Blueberries,Cranberries, Barley Grass, Dried Parsley, Dried Kelp, Taurine, Yucca Schidigera Extract,L-Carnitine, L-Lysine, Turmeric, Oil of Rosemary, Beta Carotene, Vitamin A Supplement,Thiamine Mononitrate (Vitamin B1), Riboflavin (Vitamin B2), Niacin (Vitamin B3), d-Calcium Pantothenate (Vitamin B5), Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B6), Biotin (Vitamin B7), Folic Acid (Vitamin B9), Vitamin B12 Supplement, Calcium Ascorbate (source of Vitamin C), Vitamin D3 Supplement, Vitamin E Supplement, Iron Amino Acid Chelate, Zinc Amino Acid Chelate, Manganese Amino Acid Chelate, Copper Amino Acid Chelate, Choline Chloride, Sodium Selenite, Calcium Iodate, Salt, Caramel,Calcium Carbonate, Potassium Chloride, Dried Yeast (source of Saccharomyces cerevisiae),Dried Lactobacillus acidophilus fermentation product, Dried Bacillus subtilis fermentation product, Dried Enterococcus faecium fermentation product.
Product Line Dry Dog Food – Canidae All Life Stages

The Canidae company makes good dog food, there’s no doubt about that. They only use ingredients that are “human grade”, and they never put fillers in their food.We find chicken meal, turkey meal, and then lamb meal as the top three ingredients. This is very impressive, especially considering meal is weighed aftercooking when it’s more concentrated. Dog’s are primarily carnivores, so this is definitely what we want to see.
Both brown rice and white rice are included as digestible sources of fibre, and certainly better grain choices than corn and wheat. Peas and potatoes are a great source of carbohydrates, the former also being a source of protein. The other ingredients in this food are solid, catering for all required nutrients and fats, as well as for heart health.
This is one of the better varieties from Canidae, and it’s also relatively cheap given the quality of the food.
What’s good about this food….
Very impressive meat meal content, backed up by good grains.
….and what’s not so good.
Rice bran is questionable.
Ingredients
Chicken meal, turkey meal, lamb meal, brown rice, white rice, rice bran, peas, potatoes, oatmeal, cracked pearled barley, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), millet, tomato pomace, natural flavor, meal, ocean fish meal, choline chloride, suncured alfalfa meal, inulin (from chicory root), lecithin, sage extract, cranberries, beta-carotene, rosemary extract, sunflower oil, yucca schidigera extract, dried enterococcus faecium fermentation product, dried lactobacillus acidophilus fermentation product, dried lactobacillus casei fermentation product, dried lactobacillus plantarum fermentation product, dried trichoderma longibrachiatum fermentation extract, vitamin E supplement, iron proteinate, zinc proteinate, copper proteinate, ferrous sulfate, zinc sulfate, copper sulfate, potassium iodide, thiamine mononitrate, manganese proteinate, manganous oxide, ascorbic acid, vitamin A supplement, biotin, calcium pantothenate, manganese sulfate, sodium selenite, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), vitamin B12 supplement, riboflavin, vitamin D3 supplement, folic acid, cobalt proteinate, papaya, pineapple.
Product Line Dry Dog Food – Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover’s Soul Adult Dog

The thing I love about the Chicken Soup foods are that they have their priorities in order (meat first) and that they throw an entire garden’s worth of fruits and veggies into the food. It’s quite the eclectic list of ingredients here…
First, they have 4 meat products to start the product, which is among the best you will see anywhere. The grains they use afterwards are the types we like to see, such as rice and oatmeal. There aren’t any cheap fillers like corn, soy or wheat.
There are potatoes for a high-quality carb source, and eggs for further protein. Duck and salmon are somewhat far down the list, but they only add to the variety of meat sources in this food. Plus, look at the fruits and veggies: , peas, apples, tomatoes, blueberries and spinach. It’s hard to beat that.
All of this in a food that is VERY reasonably priced!
What’s good about this food….
Awesome meat content, no fillers or by-prodcuts, quality grains, , many fruits and veggies.
….and what’s not so good.
Nothing.
Ingredients
Chicken, turkey, chicken meal, ocean fish meal, cracked pearled barley, whole grain brown rice, oatmeal, millet, white rice, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), potatoes, egg product, tomato pomace, duck, salmon, , natural chicken flavor, choline chloride, dried chicory root, kelp, , peas, apples, tomatoes, blueberries, spinach, dried skim milk, , rosemary extract, parsley flake, yucca schidigera extract, L-carnitine, Enterococcus faecieum, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Saccharomyces cerevesiae fermentation solubles, dried Aspergillus oryzae fermentation extract, vitamin E supplement, iron proteinate, zinc proteinate, copper proteinate, ferrous sulfate, zinc sulfate, copper sulfate, potassium iodide, thiamine mononitrate, manganese proteinate, manganous oxide, ascorbic acid, vitamin A supplement, biotin, calcium pantothenate, manganese sulfate, sodium selenite, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), vitamin B12 supplement, riboflavin, vitamin D supplement, folic acid.
Product Line Dry Dog Food – Dogswell

Dogswell is a relatively newer player on the market and can be difficult to find. However, like many new foods, they are emphasizing quality ingredients over cheap filler. The price tag shows that as well.
I’ve focussed on the Vitality Chicken & Oats recipe for this review, but all foods from Dogswell are similar, including the Happy Hips range.
The chicken content is definitely good, comprising the first two ingredients in both regular and meal form for extra protein. Oats and barley are top of the range as far as grains are concerns. The use of apples, blueberries, sweet potatoes, and peas also gives the impression this isn’t another run of the mill food. The high spot that has is also encouraging.
If you can find it, I’d recommend the use of this food and their treats as well.
I can’t seem to find any difference between their Happy Hips and Vitality brands other than the color of the packaging, so much of a muchness really.
What’s good about this food….
First two ingredients are meats, good inclusion of fiber with fruits and veggies, grains included are good.
….and what’s not so good.
Nothing to note.
Ingredients
Chicken, Chicken Meal, Oats, Barley, Brown Rice, Natural Flavors, Chicken Fat (Preserved with Mixed Tocopherols and Citric Acid), , Tomato Pomace, Sweet Potatoes, Apples, Dicalcium Phosphate, Dehydrated Alfalfa Meal, Potassium Chloride, Blueberries, , Peas, Vitamin E Supplement, Taurine, Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Enterococcus Faecium, Lactobacillus Acidophilus, Choline Chloride, Zinc Proteinate, Vitamin A Acetate, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Niacin, Iron Proteinate, Pantothenic Acid, Thiamine Mononitrate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin Supplement, Copper Proteinate, Garlic Powder, Chicory Root Extract, Manganese Proteinate, Folic Acid, Calcium Iodate, Cobalt Proteinate, Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Mixed Tocopherols (Natural Preservative), Sodium Selenite, Rosemary Extract.
Product Line Dry Dog Food – Dr. Tim’s Pursuit Premium

The availability of this is pretty limited as of now, but this is certainly a top tier food that is worthy of consideration by anybody. One thing I liked about this manufacturer was that they gave explanations of why they included each and every ingredient in their foods. This differs from manufacturers which boast about quality ingredients, but slip in brewers rice or soybean meal and hope nobody knows any better.
They make a couple varieties of food; this is for the food that’s 30 percent protein and an “every day” type food. The other variety is a more high performance food for the more active of dogs.
The proteins are great, with chicken and eggs present. Salmon oil, canola oil and meal are excellent fatty acid choices. The vitamin supplements are welcome as well. All in all, a terrific food if you are in its distribution area.
What’s good about this food….
Excellent protein choices, grain choices are high quality but limited, great Omega acid sources.
….and what’s not so good.
Nothing.
Ingredients
Low ash chicken meal, brown rice flour, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols and citric acid), oat flour, beet pulp, dried egg product, rice bran, low ash herring meal, flax seed meal, salmon oil, canola oil, salt, dried chicory root, calcium carbonate, potassium chloride, yucca shidigera extract, vitamins (niacin supplement, vitamin E supplement, d-calcium pantothenate, vitamin A supplement, biotin, riboflavin supplement), dried Enterococcus faecium fermentation product, dried Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation product, dried Lactobacillus acidophilus fermentation product, kelp meal, psyllium seed husks, L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate, trace minerals (iron sulfate, zinc oxide, manganous oxide, copper sulfate, cobalt carbonate, sodium selenite, ethylenediaminedihydiodide), chelated trace minerals (zinc amino acid chelate, manganese amino acid chelate, copper amino acid chelate), L-carnitine, rosemary extract.
Product Line Dry Dog Food – Earthborn Holistic Grain Free

Earthborn make some decent foods, and I believe this is one of the best. It’s grain free which is great, the ingredients are well chosen, and it’s also relatively cheap! The protein in this food is around 38% which is evidence there’s a decent amount of meat content in the food.
The main ingredients are turkey meal and then chicken meal. Both are excellent protein sources and it’s not often we see two meat meals in the first two ingredients. Potatoes are a solid inclusion for carbs and are easily digestible to dogs. We find chicken fat and whitefish meal, both are good sources of vitamins and omega fatty acids as well as the latter adding a protein boost. Egg product is also included as a further protein source, but that isn’t as good as seeing whole eggs in the food.
There’s a range of fruits and vegetables which is good to see. The minerals are all standard sources compared to brands like Canidae and Artemis that seem to use slightly more digestible variations. I won’t complain though, as the food is very good as a whole. Especially for the price.
Earthborn certainly holds it’s own as a five star food, making this one of the cheapest decent food available. Recommended.
What’s good about this food….
Great meat ingredients of a high quality and protein analysis to prove it. Good choice of carbs, vegetables, fruits.
….and what’s not so good.
Egg product and tomato pomace aren’t wonderful, but this is a small point.
Ingredients
Turkey Meal, Chicken Meal, Potatoes, Chicken Fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), Whitefish Meal, Dried Egg Product, Tomato Pomace, Peas, Blueberry Fiber, Cranberry Fiber, Apples, Blueberries, , Spinach, Cranberries, Potassium Chloride, Choline Chloride, DL-Methionine, L-Lysine, Taurine, Beta-Carotene, L-Carnitine, Vitamin A Supplement, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Vitamin E Supplement, Zinc Sulfate, Ferrous Sulfate, Niacin, Folic Acid, Biotin, Manganese Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Salt, Calcium Pantothenate, Thiamine Mononitrate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin Supplement, L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate (source of Vitamin C), Zinc Proteinate, Manganese Proteinate, Copper Proteinate, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite, Cobalt Carbonate, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Yucca Schidgera Extract, Rosemary Extract, Dried Lactobacillus Plantarum Fermentation Product, Dried Enterococcus Faecium Fermentation Product, Dried Lactobacillus Casei Fermentation Product, Dried Lactobacillus Acidophilus Fermentation Product.
Product Line Dry Dog Food – Fromm Grain Free (Surf & Turf)

Fromm Surf & Turf is a completely grain-free food, which means the food will have upped amounts of animal protein, and probably increased amounts of fruits and vegetables as well to help offset what space the grain used to take. Often times, they use potatoes to help hold the food together, like this one.
This food really has no faults, The meat sources are quality and plentiful. That’s one part of the equation, and arguably the largest. However, the sheer amount of fruits and vegetables that are used to provide vitamins and fiber can’t be ignored. These are ingredients that are among the most expensive, which is why cheaper foods don’t have them. They are very good for your dog, and are a nice touch. Whole eggs are used for additional protein as well.
This is a food you can’t go wrong with if you can foot the bill.
What’s good about this food….
Grain-free, many quality meat sources, potatoes, whole eggs, , fish oils, fruits.
….and what’s not so good.
Nothing.

Product Line Dry Dog Food – Honest Kitchen (Zeal Recipe)

With a name like “The Honest Kitchen“, I’d hope they would live up to their name. Fortunately, they do. Looking at this ingredient list brings me no faults that I can give in regards to this food. The meat ingredient is first and is quality. There are many uses of fruits and vegetables in this food. This is a grain-free food, which means the protein percentage is pretty high. This is excellent for dogs that are more active. Also included is a seriously impressive list of fruits and vegetables.
They also state on their website that this food is all human grade and is made in a facility where human food is processed. I have no qualms believing that.
This manufacturer has quite a few different varieties of food. If you go to their website, you’ll see them listed with ingredients. They all appear to be just as high of quality as this one.
What’s good about this food….
Top quality ingredients. Meat is first ingredient, and a quality one at that. No by-products, corn, wheat or soy. Very solid inclusion of fruits and vegetables.
….and what’s not so good.
Absolutely nothing.
Ingredients
Dehydrated white fish (Haddock, Whiting), sweet potatoes, eggs, organic coconut, alfalfa, apples, green beans, parsley, cabbage, bananas, Salmon, cranberries, garlic, rosemary, tricalcium phosphate, choline chloride, zinc amino acid chelate, vitamin D3 supplement, vitamin E supplement, potassium iodide, potassium chloride, iron amino acid chelate, copper amino acid chelate.
Product Line Dry Dog Food – Innova Evo Small Bites (Turkey & Chicken)
*** Please note, since Procter & Gamble took over this brand there have been a number of recalls due to traces of salmonella being found in a number of products. This includes California Naturals, Innova, EVO, Karma and Healthwise formulas ***

Evo is part of Innova‘s line of products, and is their high-protein, no grain food. This is especially good for their cat counterparts, but isn’t bad for dogs either. Besides, most of the grains used by pet food companies today are cheap and nearly worthless anyhow.
The first 4, and 5 of the first 6 ingredients are named animal meat products. No by-products or “animal digest”. They use potatoes as a main carb source, which is good. Chicken fat is used instead of beef tallow, which is good to see. They use eggs for additional proteins and a good number of fruits and veggies (apples, tomatoes and ) to supplement the animal products. They even use cottage cheese, which is unique to Evo as far as I’ve seen.
The ingredient list is also pretty short, which is usually a good thing, as longer lists tend to have more chemicals and additives.
It’s no more expensive than Science Diet and 10 times better. Highly recommended.
What’s good about this food….
Incredible meat content, potatoes for carbs, eggs, vegetables used, very limited preservatives, cheese.
….and what’s not so good.
Nothing at all.
Ingredients
Turkey, chicken, turkey meal, chicken meal, potatoes, herring meal, chicken fat, natural flavors, egg, apples, tomatoes, potassium chloride, , vitamins, garlic, cottage cheese, minerals, alfalfa sprouts, ascorbic acid, dried chicory root, direct-fed microbials, vitamin E supplement, lecithin, rosemary extract.
Product Line Dry Dog Food – Life’s Abundance

Life’s Abundance looks to be a food primarily ordered off of the internet, so you won’t find it in stores. For that reason it’s not as well known as other brands, which is a shame as it’s a very good food. Let’s take a look…
Having chicken meal first is a good indicator that this food will have solid animal protein sources, and it does. The protein isn’t sneakily inflated by the use of cheaper grain-based protein sources such as corn – that’s great to see. We also find eggs and whitefish meal in the food that will contribute additional protein, but the chicken is far more significant.
The primary grain is ground brown rice, which is a solid choice and a much more nutritious grain than the inferior white rice. In recent years we’ve seen a trend towards grain-free foods, but that doesn’t mean a decent grain-based food should be overlooked. Good grains can provide our dogs with energy, and the fiber can aid digestion. We also have chicken fat as an excellent source of energy and vital omega-6.
It’s always great to see flax seed in a dog food, another source of omega fats for health and coat. It’s something we should see in all foods.
Lastly, the fruits and vegetables are well represented here, and that’s usually the mark of a good food. All in all this is very well rounded, and buying it online gives you the convenience of delivery to your door.
What’s good about this food….
Chicken meal is first, brown rice is a solid grain, flax is present, fruits, vegetables, vitamins and minerals.
….and what’s not so good.

Product Line Dry Dog Food – Nature’s Variety Instinct (Duck & Turkey Meal)

I hadn’t heard of this food until I was notified that I should include it in this listing. While that may mean it is difficult to find in my area, it may be more accessible in others. Always call your local specialty pet stores and ask about foods like these.
Nature’s Variety has 2 main lines of food, with Instinct being its grain-free formula, which I’ll focus on here. As expected, the protein % is pretty high (35%) and it’s loaded with quality meat meals (4 of them). Notice they are meat “meals” and not just labelled as “chicken” or “duck”. Because they’re weighing them post-dehydration, it’s an accurate statement as to just how much meat is in the product.
Tapioca is an interesting ingredient, but it serves the purpose of what potatoes typically do, which is to provide a starch and help bind the food together so it doesn’t fall apart. It’s a fine ingredient. Also, pumpkinseeds may seem off to some, but they are actually quite a good fiber source and help provide lineolic acid for skin & coat.
What’s more, the line-up of fruits and veggies is present to help suppliment the vitamin count. All in all, this is a very solid food and I’m glad to now be aware of it.
What’s good about this food….
Grain-free, very high in quality meat content (first 3 ingredients), pumpkinseeds are great for fiber & skin/coat, herring meal, fruits/veggies.
….and what’s not so good.
Nothing.
Ingredients
Duck Meal, Turkey Meal, Salmon Meal, Canola Oil (naturally preserved with Mixed Tocopherols and Citric Acid), Tapioca, Tomato Pomace, Pumpkinseeds, Herring Meal, Sun-Cured Alfalfa Meal, Montmorillonite Clay, Natural Flavor, Potassium Chloride, Brewers Yeast, Vitamins (Choline Chloride, Vitamin E Supplement, Ascorbic Acid, Niacin Supplement, Biotin, D-Calcium Pantothenate, Vitamin A Acetate, Riboflavin Supplement, Thiamine Mononitrate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Iodine Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Carotene, Folic Acid), Peas, Minerals (Zinc Proteinate, Iron Proteinate, Manganese Proteinate, Copper Proteinate, Sodium Selenite), Sea Salt, Dried Kelp, Cranberries, Blueberries, Inulin, Freeze Dried Turkey, Freeze Dried Turkey Liver, Dried Enterococcus Faecium Fermentation Product, Dried Lactobacillus Acidophilus Fermentation Product, Rosemary Extract, Freeze Dried Turkey Hearts, Freeze Dried Ground Turkey Bone.
Product Line Dry Dog Food – Nutrience Grain Free

When I reviewed Nutrience Natural a few months ago I was very impressed with the food, and over time have grown to like this manufacturer. This review is for their Grain Free offering which comes in Turkey, Chicken and Herring or Ocean Fish Formula. This review is for the former, but the two varieties are on par.
I’ll start by pointing out there are 5 animal protein sources in the top 8 ingredients, which is excellent. They’re good choices too, with the top 3 being deboned turkey followed up by chicken and turkey meals – all great, lean meats. Fantastic!
We find green peas and lentils in the top ingredients, as well as sweet potatoes as a source of carbs. These are good choices, as are whole eggs as an additional source of protein (we often find the cheaper substitute of “egg product” in lower quality foods).
Salmon oil is included as a source of necessary omega fats, as is coconut oil which is a wonderful ingredient with numerous benefits (anticarcinogenic, helps arthritis and joints, good for coat, skin, and can balance the metabolism). Many vets are saying all dogs should be given coconut oil, so it’s always great to see a food which includes it.
I really find this food hard to fault. All the ingredients are well considered and of a decent quality. It’s a great food. Period.
Oh, and it’s great value for money too!
What’s good about this food….
Excellent meat proteins, great ingredient choices, well balanced, and includes essential oils and the wonderful inclusion of coconut oil.
….and what’s not so good.
Nothing.
Ingredients
Deboned turkey, turkey meal, chicken meal, green peas, sweet potatoes, lentils, deboned chicken, deboned herring, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), whole eggs, sun-cured alfalfa meal, tapioca, natural chicken flavour, chicken liver, salmon oil (source of DHA), coconut oil, pumpkin, butternut squash, , spinach, broccoli, apples, pears, blueberries, cranberries, pomegranate, juniper berry extract, ginger, fennel, green tea extract, peppermint leaf, licorice root, turmeric, vitamins [vitamin E supplement, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), vitamin A supplement, niacin, calcium pantothenate, inositol, riboflavin, pyridoxine hydrochloride, thiamine mononitrate, biotin, vitamin B12 supplement, vitamin D3 supplement, folic acid], minerals [zinc oxide, zinc proteinate, iron proteinate, ferrous sulfate, copper proteinate, copper sulfate, manganese proteinate, manganese oxide, calcium iodate, sodium selenite], dicalcium phosphate, salt, potassium chloride, lecithin, chicory root extract, choline chloride, DL-methionine, dried kelp, yeast extract, hydrochloride, rosemary extract, yucca schidigera extract, taurine, L-lysinechondroitin sulfate, L-Carnitine, dried Lactobacillus plantarum fermentation product, dried Enterococcus faecium fermentation product, dried Bacillus subtilis fermentation product, dreid Bifidobacterium animalis lactis fermentation product, dried Lactobacillus casei fermentation product, dried Lactobacillus helveticus fermentation product, dried Bifidobacterium longum fermentation product, dried Lactobacillus acidophilus fermentation product.

Product Line Dry Dog Food – Nutrience Natural

Nutrience are so confident in the quality of their foods they give a No Bad Anything promise. That’s a ballsy statement for a pet food manufacturer, so does it hold true?
This review is based on the Turkey, Chicken & Herring recipe for an Adult dog, but the other recipes in the range are very similar.
We find Deboned Turkey as the top ingredient in the food which is a great choice, but after cooking this will be far less prominent as it’s around 80% water uncooked. This is something to watch out for in some foods, but definitely no biggy here as we find Chicken Meal as the second ingredient. This is really good to see, and the protein content in the food (26%) suggests a decent amount of meat content. Both chicken and turkey are lean meats with highly digestible protein. Great.
The main grain is Oats, one of the better choices of grain in a dog food. It’s low calorie, high in soluble fibre, rich in grain protein, can reduce blood pressure, and boost the immune system. Green peas are a fantastic ingredient and very good for dogs, as are lentils and sweet potatoes.
The remaining ingredients are all of good quality, with a number of other meat and fish meals, a whole range of fruits and veggies, whole eggs, and even more unique ingredients such as the metabolism boosting ginseng (often found in energy foods and drinks).
All in all I think this is a wonderful food. It’s well thought out, and definitely adhere’s to the No Bad Anything promise.
What’s good about this food….
“No Bad Anything”
….and what’s not so good.
Nothing.

Product Line Dry Dog Food – Orijen (Adult)

Orijen is my “best in class” for cat foods, and isn’t far behind for dogs either. As was mentioned in the cat food review, this company (based in Canada) really places an emphasis on fresh ingredients. They raise their own chickens and have fishermen employed to catch fish and deliver them fresh to the company. The result is what you see above, and it’s about the best you can do for your pet.
The first 3 ingredients are all named meat products, and two of them are protein-packed “meals”, which is better yet. Next, potatoes are used for a high quality carb source. Then it’s back to meat, as whitefish are included.
This food is a delight of proteins. They use whole eggs, not “dried egg product”, for extra protein. There’s more meat in the form of turkey and salmon meal. Salmon and anchovy oils are used for fat sources and Omega fatty acids. Not only that, sunflower oil is used to include lineolic acid, which aids in coat and skin health.
As if that isn’t enough, , spinach, peas, tomatoes and apples give a strong fruit and vegetable presence in this food. There is absolutely nothing you can fault this food for.
What’s good about this food….
Very high meat content and high quality at that, potatoes in 2 places, whole eggs, fish oils for heart health, sunflower oil for coat and skin, many fruits and veggies.
….and what’s not so good.
Absolutely, positively nothing.
Ingredients
Deboned chicken, chicken meal, turkey meal, russet potato, lake whitefish, chicken fat, sweet potato, whole eggs, turkey, salmon meal, salmon and anchovy oils, salmon, natural chicken flavour, sunflower oil, sun-cured alfalfa, dried brown kelp, , spinach, peas, tomatoes, apples, psyllium, dulse, Hcl, cranberries, black currants, rosemary extract, chondroitin sulfate, sea salt.
Product Line Dry Dog Food – Pinnacle (Holistic Duck & Potato)

Pinnacle is a quality food, albeit I’ve always found it to be difficult to locate unless you buy online. A look at what’s in it doesn’t reveal any by-products or fillers. Also, duck meal is the first ingredient, with duck being the 4th ingredient to ensure that the meat content is adequate. As mentioned above, the protein % is a little lower here than some other foods, which probably only matters to dogs that are super active.
The grains are top notch, with the use of oats as a very digestible grain for dogs. Potatoes are a prominent source of carbs and fiber, and is around for great fatty acids, as is grapeseed oil. All in all, it’s a quality food that you’ll definitely pay a price for.
What’s good about this food….
Two named meats in first 4 ingredients, potatoes, oats are quality grain, & grapeseed oil.
….and what’s not so good.
The protein % is a tad low, which may matter for active dogs.
Ingredients
Duck Meal, Potatoes, Oatmeal, Duck, Oat Flour, Potato Fiber, Canola Oil (Preserved with Mixed Tocopherols), Toasted Oats, Flax Seed, Quinoa, Grapeseed Oil, Lecithin, Rosemary, Sage, Papain, Dried Lactobacillus Acidophilus Fermentation Product, Dried Bifidobacterium Bifidum Fermentation Product, Dried Bacillus Subtilis Fermentation Product, Dried Bacillus Licheniformis Fermentation Product, Dried Lactobacillus Lactis Fermentation Product, Potassium Chloride, Calcium Carbonate, Choline Chloride, Zinc Oxide, Zinc Amino Acid Chelate, Iron Sulfate, Vitamin A Acetate, Vitamin D3, Manganous Oxide, Vitamin E Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Copper Sulfate, Manganese Amino Acid Chelate, Copper Amino Acid Chelate, Riboflavin, Niacin, Calcium Pantothenate, Folic Acid, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Thiamine Mononitrate, d-Biotin, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite, Cobalt Carbonate.
Product Line Dry Dog Food – Taste of the Wild (High Prairie)

Taste of the Wild is another grain-free entry into the dog food market, and their idea is a simple one: return your dog’s diet to how it is naturally supposed to be.
It really works with this food. First, look at the top two ingredients – bison and venison! Those are certainly top quality ingredients rarely found in dog food. They certainly aren’t the cheapest either. They also use chicken and ocean fish meals to help prop up the protein percentage, which is very high. This would make an ideal food for active dogs.
For fruits and vegies, this is one of the best. These are not only great sources for vitamins, but for fiber and carbs as well. My only disappointment is that they didn’t throw in a fish oil or for a fat source, but they do have a fish meal ingredient here and that should help with those Omega fatty acids.
This is highly recommended.
What’s good about this food….
Grain-free, high protein percentage, good meat sources, eggs, lots of fruits and vegetables.
….and what’s not so good.
Nothing.
Ingredients
Bison, venison, lamb meal, chicken meal, egg product, sweet potatoes, peas, potatoes, canola oil, roasted bison, roasted venison, natural flavor, tomato pomace, ocean fish meal, choline chloride, dried chicory root, tomatoes, blueberries, raspberries, yucca schidigera extract, Enterococcus faecium, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Saccharomyces cerevesiae fermentation solubles, dried Aspergillus oryzae fermentation extract, vitamin E supplement, iron proteinate, zinc proteinate, copper proteinate, ferrous sulfate, zinc sulfate, copper sulfate, potassium iodide, thiamine mononitrate (vitamin B1), manganese proteinate, manganous oxide, ascorbic acid, vitamin A supplement, biotin, calcium pantothenate, manganese sulfate, sodium selenite, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), vitamin B12 supplement, riboflavin (vitamin B2), vitamin D supplement, folic acid.
Product Line Dry Dog Food – Viand

The word Viand means “delicacy”, or “a choice and tasty dish”. Let’s take a look at the Viand Regular Bite Lamb and Chicken formula and see if it really is a tasty dish…
For the main ingredients we find a combination of Lamb Meal and Chicken Meal. This is exactly what we should see in a food aimed at a carnivorous animal. Meat meals contain significantly less water than regular meat, and significantly more protein. As ingredients are listed in order of weight prior to cooking (inclusive of moisture), it’s far better to see a meat meal than regular meat in the top spot.
This is a grain recipe, and the choice of grains are excellent. The introduction of grain free foods has led people to believe grains are bad, which isn’t necessarily the case. The real issue with grains is carbohydrates, and feeding a dog excess carbohydrates is harsh on digestion. In this food the main grain is Oat Groats, which are lower in carbs than most other grains, and also a good source of fiber and added protein. We also find Whole Brown Rice, another good selection and far more nutritious than the inferior white rice.
It’s nice to see the inclusion of flax seed, a great source of omega 3 and fiber, and some of the added vitamins and minerals such as iron and manganese are high quality inclusions.
I see this as being a very good food, and I’d certainly recommend it. 5 stars!
It’s also worth noting, if you have a smaller dog with smaller gnashers, then have a look at the Small Bite recipe.
What’s good about this food….
Great meat and grain selections.
….and what’s not so good.
Nothing worth mentioning.
Ingredients
Lamb Meal, Chicken Meal, Oat Groats, Whole Brown Rice, Chicken Fat (Preserved with Mixed Tocopherols), Flax Seed Meal, Natural Chicken Flavor, Sea Salt, Tomato Pomace, Dried Kelp, Brewer’s Dried Yeast, Garlic, Montmorillonite Clay, Zinc Proteinate, Choline Chloride, Vitamin E Supplement, Manganese Proteinate, Charcoal, Diatomaceous Earth, Cobalt Carbonate, Iron Proteinate, Copper Proteinate, Niacin, Riboflavin, Dried Lactobacillus Acidophilus Fermentation Product, Dried Bifidobacterium Thermophilum Fermentation Product, Dried Bifidobacterium Longum Fermentation Product, Dried Enterococcus Faecium Fermentation Product, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Vitamin A Acetate, Thiamin Mononitrate, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Calcium Pantothenate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Biotin, Folic Acid and Sodium Selenite.
Product Line Dry Dog Food – Wellness CORE

Wellness has made quality pet foods for quite a while, but their CORE line is the grain-free formula. Here, we look at the “Original” kind of Wellness Core…
This is basically what you’d expect out of a top notch company. Tons of animal sources, high protein percentage, and all quality ingredients. No fillers, no by-products, nothing you wouldn’t feed your dog personally. Not only that, but it is rich in vegetables and fruits, provides for high levels of Omega fatty acids, and has a lower carb level than most foods.
It’s expensive however, and it’s for a reason. When grain is cut out, price of production goes up. Putting this much meat in a product isn’t cheap, but rest assured knowing your dog will eat less of this per serving than “normal” food because of how packed it is.
What’s good about this food….
Grain-free, high protein percentage, good meat sources, potatoes, salmon oil, fruits & veggies, .
….and what’s not so good.
Nothing.
Ingredients
Deboned Turkey, Deboned Chicken, Turkey Meal, Chicken Meal, Potatoes, Dried Ground Potato, Tomato Pomace, Natural Chicken Flavor, Canola Oil, Chicken Liver, Salmon Oil, , , Sweet Potatoes, Kale, Broccoli, Spinach, Parsley, Apples, Blueberries, Vitamins & Minerals, Chicory Root Extract, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Hydrochloride, Chondroitin Sulfate, Dried Lactobacillus plantarum, Enterococcus faecium, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus acidophilus Fermentation Products, Rosemary Extract.
Product Line Dry Dog Food – Young Again

Young Again have a single dry dog food recipe called 40/16. That may sound like a strange name for a dog food but it’s actually very significant. It stands for 40% protein, 16% fat. That’s very impressive, especially when you consider most supermarket foods average around 20% protein.
If you’re not impressed already, there’s more. A dog’s digestive system will process meat proteins far more efficiently than vegetable proteins, and the beauty of this product is all the protein comes from animals. That’s astounding! Have a look at most supermarket brands and you’ll find them stuffed with fillers like corn which contain less digestible protein.
Ok, let’s bring this back down to earth. The first ingredient is pork meal, and it’s great to see a meat meal in the top spot, but the second ingredient is potato starch. This isn’t good. It’s regarded as a filler and can cause weight gain and digestive upset. It’s also a cheap ingredient, so it’s not good seeing it in the 2nd spot. The other concerning ingredient is tomato pomace, also in the top five, another culprit for digestive upset due to acidity levels. We find this in many foods, but not often in the top ingredients.
Those two negatives aside and this is an excellent food.
I’ll give it 4 stars due to the astounding meat content.
What’s good about this food….
Astounding meat protein and fat content, without being bulked up with veggie proteins.
….and what’s not so good.
Potato starch and tomato pomace are high on the ingredients.
Ingredients
Pork Meal, Potato Starch, Chicken Meal, Chicken Fat, Tomato Pomace (source of fiber), Herring Meal, Fish Meal, Fish Oil, Dicalcium Phosphate, Brewers Yeast, Potassium Citrate, Potassium Chloride, Chicken Liver Flavor, Powdered Cellulose (source of fiber) Choline Chloride, Fructooligosaccharides (FOS), Salt, DL Methionine, Taurine, Potassium Carbonate, Vitamin E Supplement, L-ascorbyl-2polyphosphate (source of stabilized vitamin C), Betaine Anhydrous, L-Carnitine, Magnesium Sulfate, Zinc Sulfate, Rosemary Extract, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Niacinamide (vitamin B3), Biotin (vitamin B7), Thiamine Mononitrate (vitamin B1), Folic Acid (vitamin B9), Vitamin A Acetate, Riboflavin (vitamin B2), Calcium Pantothenate (vitamin B5), Selenium Yeast, Dried Aspergillus oryzae Fermentation Extract, Dehydrated Pediococcus Acidilactici Fermentation Product, Beta Carotene, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (vitamin B6), Calcium Propionate, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Cobalt Sulfate, Mixed Tocopherols and Citric Acid (Preservatives).
