What am I looking for?
For something that seems like a novelty item, you’ll find that there’s a wide array of features that can make a heated orthopedic dog bed better or worse for your situation. It’s important to keep all of these in mind when you make your purchase, and the best thing you can do is begin to ask yourself a few simple questions in order to be able to pinpoint what you need.
- How big is your dog? As with pretty much any item you purchase for your pets, the first thing to take into consideration is your dog’s size. If you find a bed that’s perfect for your furred companion, but they can’t fit into it, it’s not going to do you a lot of good.
- Indoor or Outdoor? Whether you’ll be using the bed indoors or outdoors should be another one of your initial considerations. Some of these heated beds will be able to withstand being outdoors while others will be strictly for use in the house.
- What does your dog like? If you’re buying a heated orthopedic dog bed, you obviously care greatly about your dog’s comfort. They can come in a variety of configurations, so figure out what your dog likes. Do they sleep on a regular “pad” type of bed? Curl up in one with sides? Or do they prefer to sleep with a cover over their head? This may be the most important consideration after size, and if you think it through you’re sure to have a dog satisfied with its new thermal bed.
- Electric or Not? You’ll find that there’re a few varieties of self heated orthopedic dog bed. The highest quality and warmest are sure to be electric ones, especially those that offer a thermostat so you’ll be able to most accurately pinpoint your dog’s needs. However, there are also beds which feature thermo-reflective materials that will allow your dog’s body heat to reflect and gather upon itself, making them warm without raising your electricity bill.
- Is it washable? As we all know, electricity and water aren’t a good mix and dog beds tend to get pretty nasty after heavy use. You’ll probably want one that is either washable in general or that you can remove the electronics from when it comes time to clean it, especially if this is an indoor bed.
- Does it fit into my budget? Unfortunately, even for the most dedicated dog lover out there, money is frequently a bottleneck in purchasing accessories for our beloved animals. You’ll need to make sure that the price range is a good fit for your wallet as well.

You’ll be especially pleased if you have a burrowing dog that is aged, they’ll be able to easily and painlessly go about finding their secure warm place within the bed since there actually isn’t all that much to move out of the way.
One thing you may want to consider is getting a slightly oversize bed. Especially if your dog is a dedicated burrower like a dachshund , your canine will be pleased with all the extra room to romp around under the cover.
This one is probably strictly for indoors, however, but if your dog seeks security or just likes to burrow, you’ll find that this great dog bed is perfect for your needs.
The Sheri Pet Igloo is an innovative product, the warming material makes a cozy dog cave which you’re sure to find your pet loves. It’s a bit different from the other products on this list and perfect for those dogs which need a little bit of privacy while they’re resting.

What to look for in a Heated Orthopedic Dog Bed
Different brands and models of a heated orthopedic dog bed come with a lot of different bells and whistles, but there are a few key product features to look at when choosing the best heated dog bed for you and your dog. You want to look at functionality, price, size, safety, heating element, ability to clean, and quality of materials used.
Heated orthopedic dog beds come in many different shapes and sizes to fit different functionalities you would need to use one for. We list details of each type of dog bed below, and the specific products we review below that range in a variety of types and uses. When choosing a heated dog bed, keep in mind when and where you will use the dog bed most. Factors such as whether it’s indoors or outdoors, on the couch or on the floor and whether you need to move it around frequently should all be taken into consideration before choosing a heated orthopedic bed for your dog.

These ortho dog beds come in a range of prices, depending on a variety of factors such as size, heating element and cushion materials used to make the bed. If you know you’re going to want to get a new one every couple years, you will most likely want to get a cheaper version you can replace when you want. Obviously, pricing will increase as the size of the bed increases, so if you have a larger dog, just be prepared to spend a little more than the small dog counterparts.

Since many of these orthopedic dog beds come with a heating element that usually plugs into a wall outlet, safety is a huge factor you should take into consideration when purchasing one of these dog beds. There are two different types of warming elements you can purchase – one is the plug in type in which you plug the cord into a socket to warm up the heating element within the bed, and the other is the self-heating type in which the thermostatically controlled heating element within the dog bed will dynamically warm up your dog by utilizing its own body heat to warm up the bed underneath it. If your dog is a chewer or known to tear into things, the second option may be a better choice for your dog to ensure that it doesn’t accidentally get into the heating material while plugged in.
Another factor to consider for safety is indoor vs. outdoor use. When used outdoors, it’s important that the plug in versions have some type of protective covering around the cords, preferably one made of steel to ensure it stays safe and useful in even rugged conditions. All the outdoor heated orthopedic dog bed versions we have reviewed below come with the steel protectant, since we highly recommend this for safety in outdoor use.
As noted above, there are two types of heating elements that help warm up these dog beds. One is the electrical type that you need to plug into a socket to warm up the bed, and the other is the thermostatically controlled heating element. Both are fine options, and both get the job done in keeping the dog warm. It’s a matter of personal preference, as some pet parents don’t like the idea of their dogs sleeping on an electrical element. But note – all of these products reviewed below have been proven safe with extensive use and have been proven to be safe and effective.
Ability to clean
In our humble opinions, this is one of the more important factors to look at when choosing a heated orthopedic dog bed for your pet. With your dog inevitably spending a lot of time on these beds, dirt and pet hair is bound to build up on the cover. You will want a product you can take apart and wash easily and quickly, so you can get it back to keep your dog warm and comfortable. The products we review below all have options to take the heating element out and cover off so you can easily throw the cover and cushion into the washing machine and line dry for a quick and easy clean.
Quality of materials used
You want your orthopedic dog bed to last, which means it is important to be observant of the material makeup of the product. Especially if it is for outdoor use, make sure you have a sturdy and reliable dog bed that will last in rugged conditions. If you are using it indoors, it’s nice to look for one that has a solid grip on the bottom so it doesn’t move around all over the house with an active dog. Also, depending on what your dog enjoys, there are different cushions out on the market today, ranging from regular polyester material to orthopedic memory foam versions to keep your dog comfortable. These higher end versions are great for older dogs that may be experiencing joint or muscle pain.
Different types of Heated Orthopedic Dog Beds
We looked at several different types of heated orthopedic dog beds in this review. The type you choose really will depend on how you intend to use the heated dog bed and what the configuration of the area you want to use it in looks like. The types of beds are:
Orthopedic Dog Bed with Bolster
This is the traditional floor dog bed you are probably most familiar with. It is cushioned on the bottom, which contains the heating element, and has cushioned “arms” on each side to give the dogs a soft space to rest in. Most of these come with a rubber bottom “sole” to keep the dog bed from sliding around, and is mostly recommended for indoor use. This type of orthopedic dog bed is perfect for dog owners looking for a traditional bed for their dog and is great for everyday use.
Flat Thermo Bed
The Ortho Thermo Bed is a flat, cushioned surface that you can use for your pets on the ground or to line a bed with. It usually has two or more orthopedic foam pads lining the bed for a soft and plush area for your dog to sleep in. These flat surfaces do not have a bolstered arm cushion on each side, so it is easier to fit into confined spaces, like your dog’s crate or pet gate area. Crate specific versions are also available on the market today. What differentiates this version is the slits on the corners of the mat so you can hook the corners into the crate to prevent the mat from slipping around in the crate, even if your dog is extra active. This type usually comes in multiple sizes for different types of dogs, so you can get one smaller or larger, depending on the size of your area and the size of your dog.

Outdoor Heated Orthopedic Dog Bed
An important factor to consider when purchasing a heated orthopedic bed for your dog is indoor vs. outdoor use. If you know you will be using your bed in an outdoor setting, you want to purchase a version that is going to be safe and be able to withstand rugged, outdoor conditions without breaking down early on. Outdoor heated dog beds are ideal for dogs that spend most of their time in sheltered outdoor settings like barns or sheds. The best options for this version of orthopedic beds for dogs are made with a durable material like PVC, because this ensures that the bed is waterproof and sturdy but still soft so your dog actually wants to lie on the material. Most of these also come with a fleece or other soft material liner so you can keep it on if you want a soft cover for your dog. An added bonus with using the liner is that you can easily wash the liner any time you’d like. Another type of outdoor heated orthopedic dog bed comes in a half circle to snuggly fit outdoor dog igloo or Indigo houses for dogs. These versions fit half the floor of the Dogloo so your dog can choose to sit on the warm surface or the regular house floor. Just remember when you are looking at these for purchase that they do not come with the actual Dogloo – it’s an easy mistake many people have made.
Heated Furniture Cover
One last version of the heated orthopedic dog bed we reviewed was the furniture cover version. This type of heated dog bed is a flat surface that covers a couch or love seat so your dog can sit on a warm surface on the couch while you still get to protect your couch fabric. These covers usually come with a removable heating pad that you can move around on the different sections of the cover so you can still sit on the couch while keeping your dog warm where it decides to sit. These covers are great for everyday use, and can easily be cleaned by taking out the heating element and throwing the entire cover in the washing machine.
If you decide to make the leap and purchase either a thermal dog bed or even just a self-heating one, you’ll rapidly find that you’ve just supplied your dog with a bed he may absolutely fall in love with. You’ll know you’ve made the right, informed purchase when your dog spends as much time in his bed as you wish you could, and that should make both of you happy.
Whether it’s cold weather you’re planning for, arthritic joints, or just to keep your family’s newest addition nice and warm you’re sure to find something you want in the exciting world of heated orthopedic dog bed.
